What's For Lunch JBSA - Ma Harpers Creole Kitchen

My husband does not eat fish.  Specifically he does not eat Catfish.  For 25 years, this is a thing that I know about him.  So I don't even suggest anywhere that specializes in it. So when he came home ravving one day about this place that his friends had taken him to at lunch, I was confused... he said "They have the BEST fried fish in the WORLD!!"... That was my cue that I had to check the place out for myself.

So off we went to Ma Harper's Creole Kitchen.  Located just outside of the gates of JBSA-Fort Sam Houston, there was a variety of people, Soldiers and civilians on their lunch break, 2 pilots came in with their wheeled bags, construction workers & some very well dressed business people - all milling around together, laughing and smiling with each other and the wait staff.  I wasn't sure if I was at a restaurant or at someone's neighborhood party!

I had just spent the previous weekend in New Orleans, so my standards for Creole food were set pretty high. The Menu was pretty simple - Gumbo, Po Boys, Seafood Dinners or a Fried Porkchop Dinner. I was waiting to see if the husband would beg off with "I want to try something new" but as soon as the waitress came - he ordered the Seafood dinner with Fish & Shrimp... I was torn between the Po'Boy and the Porkchop Dinner - since it was lunch - I went with the Po'boy.  I am also a fan of cornbread so we got an extra order of cornbread as an "appetizer".  If I had to give one criticism - it's that the cornbread was room temperature and not warm... didn't matter it was still EXCELLENT.

The Waitstaff was extremely kind and friendly - every time someone came in they were greeted with "Welcome to Ma Harpers!"  They made suggestions for those of us that were unsure of what to order.  The food came out quickly, it was hot & everything tasted amazing!  The bread was crusty, the fries were fresh & the fish was delicate and still crisp - not overcooked.  Well seasoned but not overseasoned.

Yes, I recognize that the only bit of green on this plate is the lettuce that was peeking out of the folds of my po'boy - but you don't come to Ma Harper's to eat healthy... you come to feel like you've come home...

Hungry today?  Check out Ma Harpers at 1816 N. New Braunfels Ave!
